How Forces Converged to Create the York Barbell

 A New Jersey business executive from Newark, Anthony Berritto has been the CEO of SalSon Logistics, also based in Newark. Outside of his work in logistics, Anthony Berritto has an interest in weightlifting.

The barbell has been a centerpiece of weightlifting, one with an interesting history. Weightlifting emerged as a form of fitness in the mid-nineteenth century. Before this time, weightlifting drew no interest because men had little desire or the luxury to commit time to the sport outside of militaries, which had been using them since the early 1800s. Also, gymnasiums that house weights did not exist until the mid-nineteenth century when interest in the sport increased.

Donald Walker developed the earliest known barbell in modern history in the 1830s. Those that came after in 1860s Europe had fixed weights attached to them on both ends, so they could not be interchanged in the same way that users can with today’s weights. Because the barbells were fixed weights, amateurs had difficulty using them. At some point, the strong men of Europe popularized the sport, and it reached American shores.

However, a German evolution of the barbell was pivotal in the evolution of this weightlifting device. The Germans adjusted the weight by adding or removing sand from the bulbs at the ends of the barbell. However, this did not allow for efficient use of time. Further, sometimes the sand spilled or was unevenly distributed in the barbell.

By 1908, American inventor Alan Culvert’s Milo Triplex allowed weightlifters to add and remove the weight plates. This feature made weightlifting accessible for novices who adjust the barbells to their fitness levels. Stronger users could add more weight. Later, clips that held the weights in place prevented them from slipping off and kept the weightlifter safe.

The York Barbell brand was developed in 1932 when weightlifting gained traction in the fitness community. The brand was used by the US Olympic team. While the brand emerged almost a century ago, it remains popular and houses the Weightlifting Hall of Fame in Museum at its Pennsylvania corporate office.

Logistics also aids in the improvement of service quality. A company's service quality increases when it delivers products to consumers quickly and transports them in safe circumstances.
